Union Hospital is a primary care Critical Access Hospital presently licensed for 25 acute beds and is staffed for 18 beds. 10 of these beds, in the acute care section, are designated for swing bed (short term) patients. Other departments of the hospital include Nursing Service, Clinical Laboratory, Radiology, Surgery, a Certified Level V Emergency Room, Central Supply, Physical Therapy, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Respiratory Therapy, as well as the usual support services. We have outreach services in Home Health Care, WIC, and counseling services through contract. We also participate in an outreach program for CPR instruction in the local high schools and some public education. C.N.A. classes are held four times per year at Union Hospital.

Other services utilizing Union Hospital are: AA counseling, Beltone Hearing Aid Service, SE Human Service Center, and Mammography.

MEDICAL RECORDS DEPARTMENT

The Medical Records Department organizes, manages, and maintains all of the health information at Union Hospital. Our main focus is to ensure quality care through accurate health information. We employ an Accredited Records Technician and a medical transcriptionist with combined experience of over thirty years.

SURGERY

The Operating Room of Union Hospital is dedicated to providing optimum care to the surgical patient. Surgical specialties performed at Union Hospital include ophthalmology, obstetrics/gynecology, and general urological as well as endoscope type procedures. We believe at Union Hospital that it is the right of the consumer to receive the highest quality of surgical care according to need, and we at Union Hospital are here to provide this service.

 

ALTRU HOME HEALTH CARE

Home Health Care offers home health services including skilled nursing, home health aides, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and social work services. Services may be covered by private insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid if individuals meet certain qualifications. No age limitations.

 

RESPIRATORY THERAPY

The Respiratory Care Department supports and cares for patients who have problems associated with the lungs and breathing. The department provides both inpatient and outpatient therapy, and is staffed by a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner. Treatments include nebulizer therapy, chest percussion and postural drainage, oxygen therapies, incentive spiromety and metered dose inhalers, and Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT).

 

ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT

The Activities Department is set up to assist those patients who have leisure skills to continue with those and to provide assistance to other patients to develop interests. Group activities are also held such as parties, Diabetes Education, baking, bingo, cards and discussions.

 

SOCIAL SERVICES

The Social Service Department at Union Hospital was developed to serve the patient, family, physician, hospital and community. The objectives are to encourage optimum utilization of medical care; help the patient and family resolve problems contributing to, or resulting from illness; help the patient and family cope with illness and assist in planning for post-hospital care of the patient. The Social Service Department also serves as a liaison between the hospital and resources in the community. The department employs one Licensed Social Worker.

 

CARING CLUB

The Caring Club of Union Hospital is a dedicated group of volunteers who give so freely of themselves to support the day to day operation of the hospital. The volunteers help in all areas including the business office, direct patient contact and with fund raising through their recycled cards. With the volunteers' support, Union Hospital is better able to meet the needs of the community.




NURSING
The Nursing Department at Union Hospital staffs the general floor, swing bed, as well as ER. The staff is made up of RNs, LPNs and CNAs. RNs and LPNs have completed a basic cardiology class as well as ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). RNs also attend Trauma Nurse Core Courses (TNCC) and LPNs have attended PHTLS (Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support). Other in-service education is conducted on a regular basis to keep the nursing staff current.

LAB/X-RAY
Lab and X-ray are available 24 hours a day with an on-site Radiologist once a week. The Lab is very well equipped with all the latest automated equipment and recently passed its certification as a CLIA Clinical Laboratory.

CARDIC REHABILITATION
Cardiac Rehabilitation is staffed by qualified and trained Cardiac Rehabilitation nurses. It is open to Cardiac Rehabilitation three days a week. Phase 2 sessions are offered for patients after a heart attack, CABG, or other cardiac event. Patients are monitored while they exercise. Phase 3 patients are not monitored and are generally beyond the acute phase.

DIETARY
The goals of Union Hospital Dietary Department are to provide nutritionally adequate meals to patients. The Dietary Department strives to meet the therapeutic nutritional needs of the patient by complying with physicians' orders. The Dietary Department has a Licensed Registered Dietitian on staff. The Union Hospital also provides dietary consultation and also diabetic education.

MEMBERSHIPS
Union Hospital is licensed by the State of North Dakota certified for Medicare and Blue Cross. It is a member of the American Hospital Association, North Dakota Health Care Association, Valley Rural Health Cooperative, Traill County Service Providers Counsel, and is an affiliate hospital with VHA.

 

CENTRAL SUPPLY

Central Supply was established to centralize the preparation, distribution, and control of sterile items, non-sterile items and equipment used in all areas of the hospital. By centralizing these activities, it makes it possible to provide an efficient service. Central Supply is staffed by two, five days a week or when needed. The hours remain somewhat flexible to cover the patient census.
